Freelance Whales

“Freelance Whales found one another in late 2008, in Queens, New York, amidst a strange amalgam of unfamiliar instruments, and precariously arranged pop songs. Using whatever musical gadgets they happened upon (mostly harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums, waterphone), the five members worked at crafting songs with interlocking rhythmic patterns, lush textural layering, and an engaged group-vocal energy. The result is their debut LP, Weathervanes, whose songs work at evoking a sense of dislocation, or sensory disorientation. They invite the human spirit to exit the body, if only for brief moments. Freelance Whales can be spotted in the streets and humble venues of New York City, and in due time, elsewhere.”

I included the whole album Weathervanes, but a few of my favorites are Generator ^ 1, Generator ^ 2, and Ghosting.

I don't have much to say about this video, so I'll let it speak for itself.  Just wanted to share with everyone.

School Of Seven Bells

OFFICIAL WEBSITE: http://www.sviib.com/
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/schoolofsevenbells

School of Seven Bells is a dream pop/shoegaze band which formed in 2007 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The band consists of Alejandra Deheza (vocals, bass), and Benjamin Curtis (guitar, electronics). Alejandra’s identical twin sister Claudia (vocals, keyboards) was also a member of the band until leaving for personal reasons in October 2010. The Deheza sisters are former members of On!Air!Library! and Curtis is a former member of Secret Machines and Tripping Daisy. The band is named after the School of the Seven Bells, a mythical South American pickpocket training academy.

Their sound has been described as dreamy and ethereal, and the lyrics as abstract. Alejandra Deheza, insists that the lyrics are not.

REMIX MONDAY: Hudson Mohawke: Fuse

I recently found this hard hitting dubstep remix of Hudson Mohawke’s Fuse by an up and coming DJ called Depone. With a string of digital releases under his belt, and forthcoming vinyl releases on various labels, his tracks are being spun worldwide by the likes of Sukh Knight, Funtcase, Downlink and Datsik. Things can only get better for this producer going into 2011.

SINGLE SUNDAY: Fake Empire

First, HAPPY 2011!  Sorry I have been gone so long.  It has been a busy few weeks for me!  I went to a great show in Chicago that I'll make sure to let everyone know about.  Anyway...enjoy!

AllMusic considered "Fake Empire" one of The National's best songs, and described it as a song that "begins as a dead-of-night ballad that echoes Leonard Cohen, then peppy brass and guitars turn it into something joyous." Mark Mordue of WAToday called "Fake Empire" "one of the great rock'n'roll songs" of 2007. He described it as "a romantic-sounding tune marked by a quiet declaration that 'We're half awake in a fake empire,' [which] married the lonely-guy blues of a New York night to a veiled critique of American imperialism. In short, it expressed the feelings of being lost inside a dream." Stylus Magazine ranked "Fake Empire" as the 7th-best song of 2007.
